comment Can I detach my Samsung SSD 840 Pro without losing any sensitive data?
@Ramhound - the OP never said whether he meant to hot plug or not.

comment How much clock drift is considered normal for a non-networked windows 7 PC?
Is the system on most of the time, all of the time, or what? It does matter, because the RTC in most systems is much less accurate when running on battery.

comment What is the ASCII (Alt+number) for the square root symbol (√) in Windows?
As a side note- that symbol, and the Alt-code to enter it have nothing to do with ASCII. ASCII only defines 128 symbols.

comment What are the Windows A: and B: drives used for?
@lunchmeat317 - *NIX systems were not relevant to the development of the PC-clone hardware pseudo-standards that evolved into today's PC. There were not enough users for the vendors to care at that time what the *NIX people did.

You'll want to mention the OS in question. Obviously you're talking windows, but which variants? This is the kind of behavior that might change over the years. Also, have you set up a test case and tried your various scenarios to see what would happen?

comment How to STOP people from DOWNLOADING an online video for OFFLINE PLAYBACK
There is NO WAY to completely prevent people from pirating your video. There's always a way for them to grab it. I'd suggest doing one or two videos, sell them without DRM, and then see how it goes. You can't stop all the pirates anyway, and if you can make money on the deal, then the fact that some pirates are getting a free ride may not be as big a problem as it at first appears.

comment Hard disk failure is imminent
@Gargee - the unusual thing here isn't that you have so many. It's that the drive is still useable at all at this point. It won't stay that way. THERE IS NO HOPE FOR THIS DRIVE. Your only hope now is to get your data out before it's too late.

comment Windows 7 or 8 when replacing XP
@NeilTownsend - XP support is good till April 2014, so I'd recommend just saving your pennies till then. Put aside the price of a windows license now to start, and hopefully by then you'll have enough for a new (low-end) laptop.

comment Windows 7 or 8 when replacing XP
Are you in a position where you can just replace the machine? I wouldn't go taking large bets on the longevity of a 6 year old HD, even if you don't use it much.

comment does encryption and disk wiping, using gutmann or dod, produce the same measure of entropy?
@john - you can claim whatever you like. The question is, who do you claim it to? And how will the claim benefit you? What will that let you get away with, or preserve? They'll never believe you don't know about encryption at all. Unless you manage to wipe everything else, they'll know you at least have Truecrypt, so you can't pretend total ignorance. The best you can do is have more plausibility in refusing to give up the keys (Honest, Judge, I wiped it - there is no key to give up!). And then they've got a big chunk of circumstantial evidence that you were up to whatever they say you were.

comment Does Dropbox sync when computer is asleep or locked?
@CorySimmons - The only question is the definition of lock and sleep - They should be pretty universal terms, but I find that when I make too many assumptions, the universe tends to smack me in the head.

comment Disable (unbind) default Win+Arrows hotkeys to make them usable in other applications
The only thing you could do with this 'solution' is to remap the keyboard to not have a windows key, replacing it with some other scan code, then map that key. NOT a good solution, as anything that tries to use the Win key for anything would be unusable.

@AaronHardy - I just added 'check the firewall' config to my answer. Might be worth your time to compare the two.

comment Why can this one user not print to a printer that someone else in the same office can print to?
@AaronHardy - I'm just thinking that the relay box adding a variable into the mix that may be the root of the issue. Routing around the relay box reduces the number of variables in play, and therefore the likelyhood of success.

@Dave - see my revision - Windows has a way that (well behaved) programs can cause this to work correctly.

You'll want to quote the ~ characters - depending on shell, a lone ~ may get expanded into something.

comment Google Drive inside TrueCrypt folder
@user13664 - have you considered whole disk encryption? It might actually be easier to use than what you're working toward.
