comment Install Windows XP alongside Windows 8
It'd help a lot to know the model number to find drivers, yep. However, it's also important to realize that XP is nearing its end-of-life, and it may not feel as lightweight as it seems.

comment Partition around bad drive sectors?
To respond to the duplicate question flag: drives can only remap a few dead sectors, and when there are more than that any basic drive utility will do nothing. The accepted answer on that other question costs more than a drive, so that's not too helpful. @ilansch yeah no I definitely don't make that much money. And I'm under the impression a disk head crash should only damage a few sectors, so why on earth would more sectors go bad?

comment Windows 8 not using max CPU speed on heavy operations
@terdon It's got an i5, it can't be that old. JBernardo, try openhardwaremonitor.org, should do the trick.

What's your laptop model? It sounds like an issue with either clogged fans or just a terrible cooling design (there are plenty of laptops that suffer from this kind of thing).

comment 3rd display: laptop and 2 displays
Oh, really? Interesting. Where does one find this sort of info on laptops? Manufacturer websites never seem to have detailed info like that.

comment Java uninstalled but still java -version is showing 1.7?
I'm not sure why that would be. I assume you're running OSX 10.7+? (Since you have Java 7, of course).

comment Rapid SSD degradation
Good point in general, not so much with Sandforce. Since the Sandforce controller compresses all of it's data, fragmented data means it has to do more work to access it (or something. anandtech.com/show/6107 has some discussion on Sandforce TRIM.) I'm guessing this drive is SF internally because of the read speed issue and because Kingston uses a bunch of SF controllers.

comment How can I prevent Ask Toolbar and Ask Toolbar Updater from installing when jucheck installs an update?
I'd love to see a solution that gets rid of the option entirely, though. Doubt it's possible but if it was it should be spread; tons of people just keep hitting "next" and wind up with half their screen full of toolbars.

@slhck I'd upvote that if it was an answer

comment Is there a way to create a virtual drive in Ubuntu that contains multiple NTFS partitioned drives?
It sounds to me like the solution you're looking for is a custom Unity icon (which, mind you, I don't know how to do), not a "virtual hard drive". Is that accurate?

comment Full screen an application on half of the window?
Sadly, I don't think there's a foolproof (non-application-specific) way to do this. I wish there was, I'd definitely use it!

comment The behavior of a PC setup with OpenGL, Directx, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator and Nvidia Optimus
Your question is a little vague. But @Andre's answer covers it pretty well. Not sure why you put OpenGL and DirectX in the question title.

Try plugging in the headphones before turning on the monitor. (The speakers in the display do work, right? If not you need to fix that first.)
