comment Installing a secondary drive in an HP Envy 17 laptop
I vaguely recall reading something about a master/slave relationship between primary and secondary drives, but I could be wrong.

comment How do I disable Google Chrome's autocomplete?
This still doesn't turn off suggestions from your history and bookmarks. It only prevents Chrome from fetching suggestions at Google's servers.

comment Change the spell-checking language on a PowerPoint presentation
For me, this only worked on existing text in PowerPoint 2010. For newly added text, the language would still change in certain cases.

Just a heads up: this website has a Trustworthiness rating of "Unsatisfactory" on Web of Trust, but no user reviews are listed.

Are there any online consumer services that let you stream Windows apps in a Citrix-like fashion? Sorta like OnLive, but for software.

comment TP-Link router sometimes fails to negotiate proper IP address
Thank you for clarifying what's happening. That explains why my hosts are getting a public IP address from the ISP when I get internet access. Oddly enough, I have been able to get multiple hosts online simultaneously, each with their own public IP. Does this mean that the ISP has reserved multiple addresses for this home? The cable box does have a built-in router, but the family member had it disabled for reasons unknown to me. I'll discuss the situation with them to see what they want.

I've updated my post. The cable box also has some non-internet cables (telephone and digital TV) plugged in to it, but I left them out for the sake of simplicity. Does this give you the information you need?

comment Windows 8 no longer sends sound to headphones when plugged in
Does this reinstate the auto-switching behavior? I can no longer reproduce the problem so I can't verify your proposed solution. I think it may have been driver-related in my case, because I'm currently using the default Windows 8 driver instead of the one that the manufacturer supplied.

I don't know... I haven't had any more problems with it. I guess you could check the "Not plugged in" indicator in the Sound window.

So I was poking around in the Sound windows when I noticed that the Headphones indicator said "Not plugged in". I set the default output device to Headphones while the cable was plugged in and it worked fine. I don't think that anything changed driverwise. Hardware failure is not off the table yet, but at least it's working for the time being.

Isn't there a built-in Windows diagnostic that says "Headphones are plugged in" or "Headphones aren't plugged in"?

Good question. Is there any way to check?

comment Windows 8 wants to reactivate with new motherboard, error 0x80070241
As indicated in my post update, I got this notification in my Action Center. I let Windows 8 do its thing. The problem (and a possibly related problem with code 52 on a signed device driver) have since disappeared.

Yeah, probably a better idea. I've updated the post.

comment Windows 8 wants to reactivate with new motherboard, error 0x80070241
I got this output when I ran the first command. I also talked to Microsoft on the phone. They ended up directing me to the DreamSpark website (because I got my key from DreamSpark Premium), but Windows appears to have activated itself correctly in the meantime. Not sure whose answer I should credit... I do have a separate issue where I'm getting code 52 on my iPod driver. Could this be related?

Not sure whose answer I should credit... I had tried slui 4 before but that gave me an error message I don't remember. The "Provide these numbers when you're asked" section was empty at that time.

comment Generic Synaptics driver keeps reverting through Windows Update
Is there a tool that lists all the drivers that are currently installed on my system, including drivers that aren't in use? I might be able to find the old Synaptics driver that way and remove it if it's still there. Another possibility is that Windows 8 is fetching this outdated driver from Windows Update, which can happen even if the driver's not installed.

Tried that before, but for some reason it keeps coming back.
