comment How to remove Windows 8 bootloader (or arrange for Grub not to detect it)
Have you tried adding .bak to the bootloader filename? You can easily revert it at any time.

comment what does this highlighting of folders refers too
@chrfin I guess those tests you mention give such results because HDD speed is the limiting factor, so decreasing file size improves performance. That probably won't be the case for SSD drives.

comment I accidentally typed password into bash command line
If you can't change your password easily at any time, then you may have a serious security loophole. What will you do when someone actually gets your password? Do you have any means to immediately revoke system access?

comment Releasing disk space on guest, reduces free space on host
Fixed-size virtual drive won't be much help, though. In won't grow, but it will be as big as autoexpanded drive can be when full. If the problem is that disk image grows, then making it big from the very beginning isn't a solution.

I think it's because such tools rely on heuristics. When filesystem is damaged to that extent, you can make it even worse with automatic repairs. Emergency recovery should always be performed in read-only mode to avoid any accidentals.

comment How to make a bootable USB out of the folder in which the data of windows 8 setup is there?
Just insert that disk once again and make a proper ISO. Simpliest solutions are usually the best.

@MosheKatz Sorry, I assumed you're talking about the registry hack somebody posted here previously, but it looks like that answer has been deleted. Here's the difference: i.stack.imgur.com/ezB9r.png "Never combine" will display labels which is irritating, because it takes up taskbar space. The hack I've been talking about is setting label width to 0 which in effect gives the "not combined, no labels" look.

@MosheKatz it's not a feature, it's a hack. It's not officially supported by Microsoft. Any Windows update can break it. If 7+TT ever breaks badly you can simply boot in safe mode and disable it. But if the hack breaks, you'll need bootable system able to edit external registry - not so easy. 7+TT is lightweight, provides more useful features and does it the right way.
