Thank you for mentioning btrfs. Unfortunately I couldn't find the feature you mentioned. spinics.net/lists/linux-btrfs/msg05617.html says that in July 2010 this was not possible. Could you please cite your source stating otherwise.

Thank you for the tip! FYI After TRIMming, writes some blocks with metadata for an empty ext4 filesystem, so the a few percent of the partition remains unTRIMmed.

Intel's video driver supports accelerated video decoding (intellinuxgraphics.org/h264.html) with a fork of mplayer (gitorious.org/vaapi/mplayer) The minimum Linux kernel version seems to be 3.2.x, which is not available for Ubuntu Lucid.

@slhck: AVCHD already contains H.264 video, so there is no need to reencode it.
