comment What ATI cards support split screen with OSS Linux drivers?
It's not entirely clear from your wording what you mean by "split-screen", but I'm assuming you mean that you want a dual-screen display. Which Linux distro are you using? The drivers available "out of the box" will depend on what distro you're using. Do you need them to be on the install CD, or is it OK if they get downloaded automatically by the package manager?

comment How do I tell what Microsoft OS corresponds to a key
Did you build the computer yourself, or is it from an OEM? If it's from an OEM, you may be able to check the original ordering info online; for example, with Dell you can enter the service code on support.dell.com and see the original configuration, including the OS. If it was custom built, it'll be an OEM key, most likely for XP Home or XP Pro; the only way to tell would be to test it with each and see which works.

comment Hide account from login screen but can be used in UAC
Yes, it is an option in gpedit.msc, however, that isn't available on Windows 7 Home Premium, so I left it out since people without Win7 Pro or later would be confused and unable to follow the instructions. If you want to do it in the group policy editor though, you can go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Credential User Interface and change the setting for "Enumerate administrator accounts on elevation" to "disabled".

I haven't finalized my solution quite yet, but this looks like the right path to pursue, and got me most of the way there, so I'm giving you the bounty and marking it accepted. Thank you very much for your help!

comment How do I know if a LCD is compatible with my Laptop?
What do you mean by a "compatible LCD"? Are you trying to find an external monitor to use with your laptop or do you need to replace the built-in screen of the laptop itself?
