comment What should I look for in a UPS to protect my system from outages and surges?
thanks for being flexible and responding to the feedback! It's hard to know all these details as a new user, so no worries. It looks like there's a pre-existing question that covers this topic in pretty good detail, so take a look and see if that will meet your needs.

@techie007 I found a question that I think better fits here: superuser.com/questions/9946/…

comment What should I look for in a UPS to protect my system from outages and surges?
Shopping questions are considered off-topic here, but if you edit your question to the form of "what is the process to choose the right UPS for a given system" (without specifying the system specs) then it becomes a more generally useful question that helps everybody, and would be reopened. See this Stack Exchange blog post for more details.

comment RAM not usable?
@Synetech and harrymc, I think it would be good if you both took a less aggressive approach to each other. Synetech, anybody is free to post answers, and the community is free to vote on them as they see fit. Harry, while you're free to answer as you like, sarcastic comment replies are not productive either. Thank you!

@Ramhound it says "SAS" not "SATA". They're different.

comment Cannot launch application on Wifi Connection
In the task scheduler, it should show if the event ran successfully, exited with an error, or didn't exit at all. Connect to the network and check to see if anything shows up for the latest run in the task scheduler. Hard to tell if it isn't triggering or if the program you're running has an error.

@Charles use the edit button to update your first post, and please don't put multiple answers to a single question. You will need to edit your more recent answers into this original answer; they've been deleted.

comment Using multiple instances of webcam without thirdparty applications in windows
FYI @Unnikrishnan if you see a spam answer on a post, please flag it as "spam" instead of "not an answer". The system handles spam flags in a special manner, and content can be automatically deleted if it receives enough spam flags. This also helps the automatic spam filters learn.

comment Can I get Microsoft Word to save before Windows goes into sleep mode? (avoiding having to 'recover' files)
It seems to me that instead of doing this, it might make more sense to figure out why Word crashes when your computer goes to sleep. I've never seen Word just completely crash when the computer goes to sleep, so you might be trying to solve one thing when really something else needs fixing.

comment Is it possible to map an IP address to a USB port?
@Chris I realize this is rather after the fact, but it looks like you're still somewhat active on the SE network, so you might want to take a look at What is the X/Y problem? - it describes the scenario sawdust is referring to here. We specifically ask users to ask "practical, answerable questions based on real-life problems they face," which is why we prefer to get to the bottom of what people are actually trying to do, instead of the one step they're stuck on when there might be a different, easier way.

Please keep comments on-topic, polite, and relevant to the technical aspects of the question. Nearly 50 joke comments already had to be removed, and we'd like to avoid having to lock the post. Thank you.

comment Windows 7 Desktop was “reset”
This is probably unrelated to the CD being there and just a coincidence. Try rebooting first - it sounds like you got logged in with a temporary profile because it had an issue loading something. If rebooting doesn't fix it, let us know and I'll give you some instructions on how to copy things over from the old profile.

comment Trick Comcast into thinking I'm loading a lot of pages
Addon to your server or addon to your service? Also, are you really only getting 1/4 of what you pay for? I've had comcast and regularly got slightly higher than I was paying for. Make sure you have a DOCSIS 3.0 compliant modem and that you've reset your modem recently (just power cycling is fine). If you're still getting speeds that low, definitely file a support ticket.

comment If a server is just a big computer, why not just use a server as your computer?
As people are saying, nothing's stopping you from doing it, and some people do this exactly, but there are cheaper ways to get a high-performance computer.

comment Installing Windows over Ubuntu on Surface Pro
I'm a little confused here. Did you actually try creating a Windows 8 bootable USB installer or not? Because that's what you should do.
