+1 for option nr 4 - you can't effectively solve a psychological problem with an engineering solution

comment Rewiring GPU with RAM?
@DanielB I never said that DIY wiring of hi-freq RAM chip will get you good results or a working application; I only disagree that it's impossible to rewire BGA at all - because it obviously is possible, because I (and other people) have already done it - e.g. WLAN router modders (me included). Also, there's entire branch of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Signal_conditioning - you can recover even a severly noised signal (especially digital) by sacrificing bandwidth, e.g. by implementing redundancy & various ECC schemes. Believe me or not, but it's actually possible.

comment Rewiring GPU with RAM?
-1 because it'd be still (theoretically) possible to just cut & resolder or otherwise rewire the traces themselves from RAM's PCB to the pad under the VRAM instead of desoldering the RAM chips from the memory block. That's what I did when I had to deal with attaching a JTAG debugger to a BGA chip, and that's what makes the main point of Your answer invalid. Of course, the OP's idea is still moronic and wouldn't work for a variety of factors even if he could do it flawlessly (and that would require EE experience he/she obviously lacks), but not for the reason You outlined.

why solder at all and not simply use some glue & duck tape to bond'em together? or just use red marker to draw a connection between them? ... as a side note: last time I had successfully replaced RAM on a video card was when there actually was a socket used by manufacturer - DUH - even soldering SSOP packages by hand ain't that easy, mate, going for BGA doesn't come any cheaper than that.

actually, since currently midnight-commander.org/wiki/Binaries points to Your page, and the builds are updated constantly, I reckon this is the "official" answer.

comment Why is it not recommended to shut down a computer “brutally” (power switch)?
@Majenko well, 40 years is a bit of an overstatement... some particular 1990's disks and CD-ROMs were prone to head crash if the power was cut off too, possibly due to vibrations/damping issues - I experienced that myself with 13 GB drive, and it wasn't pretty what I saw looking at the discs afterwards. Also, I've had a similar issue with CD audio player destroying a CD. While I haven't had that trouble since then, 20 years old equipment is not that rare in e.g. server or academy environments, so I'd concur with Baard on this one; it doesn't have to be a purely software thing.

+1 for being the only answer here dealing with the real issue, not only of what would happen, but also why.
