Then we know that it's not the laptop. Even if you had some secret firewall, you'd still see the packet come in. Capturing from the client would be the next step. I bet you'll see the SYN packet sent from the client only to be black holed or RST by the router.

iotop is the equivalent for IO monitoring. Generally storage throughput is a function of drive and network speed. Rarely are CPU/RAM an issue in file transfers. sar from the sysstat package is good for more in depth monitoring.
