comment What's the advantage of using RAR's?
I remember the good old days, when some people would use ZIP, and some people would use LZH, and some people would use ARC, and some people would use ZOO...

comment What could I do with a spare computer?
+1 – if you've never looked inside a computer before, then pulling it apart would be a great idea. And then see if you can reassemble it so that it still works :-)

If you read the question, he said he still has the original computer, but the (external) floppy drive has fallen apart.

comment How do I find out what service is using a certain port?
+1 for the builtin solution. "Use sysinternals" seems to be the answer to every Windows question here, but it's good to know how to solve problems without 3rd party software.

Do you log in as admin every time you start up your laptop?

But is tying your bike up with an inch-thick chain better than a half-centimetre chain? I've always figured if a thief is going to carry about bolt cutters, they'll carry around big ones.

comment Is it good practice to create directories in the root of your C: drive?
So, My Documents is a bad idea in the situation where (a) it's in the default place on C:, (b) you manage to completely destroy your C: partition, (c) your D: parttion is still fine and dandy, and (d) you have no backups.

comment “Broken” directory in OSX - what can I do?
I followed the instructions on that Apple page. When I tried to open the .sparseimage, OSX said it was damaged and opening it might break my system :-/ so I made a copy (65GB over the network.. ugh.) and then opened it. No trouble. Disk repair fixed some issues. I had some trouble resetting the permissions (changing the ownership of my home directory back to my username wouldn't "stick", until I tried setting to my username, then back to admin, then back to my username again), but all seems well now, and the directory is working again. Thanks.
