ν42 is my programming blog. You can also find me on Twitter, LinkedIn, GitHub, O'Reilly's programming blog, CPAN, Perltricks.com, and Google+.

I am a consultant with a Ph.D. in Economics, and a passion for programming. I picked up my first language, Z-80 assembly, more than three decades ago. Since then, I have worked with a variety of programming languages such as APL, C, Pascal, Fortran, C++, Python, Ruby, but my most favorite is Perl by far. Recently, I have been working on gaining a decent understanding of Ocaml and F#.

As an economist, I mostly work on health care related projects these days, focusing on both pricing structures, and productivity improvements. My dissertation was in the field of experimental economics, and I am an expert in applied microeconomics, data analysis, econometrics, and statistics. I have been using SAS since 1995, Stata since it came out, and occasionally dabble in MatLab/Octave and R. With the data sets I am using, the fact that SAS does not need to hold the data set in memory is a huge advantage.

On the development side, I maintain a few packages on CPAN, try to contribute to others as much as I can.

I am available for one-on-one coaching, training, codebase analysis and evaluation, forensic analysis, and other development related consulting projects as well. If you have a large data set which you do not want to have tortured at the hands of significance seeking, let me know.

I am a member of the American Economic Association, Economic Science Association, and American Society of Health Economists.

How to Say in Turkish is a pet project of mine.

Unur.com is my long-time personal web site. I occasionally post new photos there.

All original source snippets I post on Stackoverflow.com, and other sites in the StackExchange network are dedicated to the public domain. If you do find value in my answers, I would very much appreciate an attribution and acknowledgement where possible.

comment Why am I getting 'ppm: Command not found' on Mac OSX after installng ActiveState Perl?
OK, I don't mean to offend you, but I think you've put the cart before the horse. You should learn how to use the computer and operating system you chose before taking up programming. Otherwise, it is going to be very, very, very, very frustrating for you.

comment Very slow old notebook laptop- wiping and reinstalling does not help - suggestions?
Also, once you boot with a freshly installed XP, the computer WILL BE BUSY downloading updates for a while. You might want to try to grin and bear it while that's going on.

Which is why I am suggesting you might want to upgrade it. You are starting with a tiny old drive. Given the low memory, there is probably some swapping going on. Can you post screenshots of the "Processes" and "Performance" tabs in Task Manager and the model of the hard drive shown in Device Manager?

Sorry, neither local machine nor current user run entries point to anything. Besides, I want to get rid of all traces of the this thing.
