I don't think the surface is a problem. I know by experience how the mouse behaves on gradients or the like on the surface. It's not a weird movement, rather an instant jump that comes from time to time and cannot be reproduced by simply moving over the same spot again. Nevertheless I'll use a sheet of paper to absolutely exclude the surface as a problem.

Updated my post. This behaviour is only when using tmux/screen. In tmux Ctrl-L does not work properly and Ctrl-H doesn't do a thing. Added some more infos to my intro post.
