Most likely not "too new". What's the last test output in config.log?

What kind of for loop have you tried under bash? You only show wildcard expansion. Also, with your comment above I am not sure anymore if you want help or are just trolling.

comment Gentoo installation issues
emerge is part of the portage package, and if you don't have that installed your installation is truely broken (portage is at the heart of Gentoo). This is impossible to fix without going into the gory details on how you came to that point of a broken Gentoo installation.

Shell commands are case-sensitive and it should be emerge wpa_supplicant. Also, don't follow some random website, but the official Gentoo installation guides from gentoo.org/doc/en/?catid=install#doc_chap2.

comment What is the difference between yum, apt-get, rpm, ./configure && make install?
@recursive: At some time apt-get didn't record automatic dependencies and left them behind after an uninstall, while aptitude then introduced proper dependency tracking. In addition then it also provided some additional features not available in apt-get. I am not sure, but I think at some point apt-get and aptitude where updated to use the same, advanced backend providing much of that functionality.
