comment Backing up files on ubuntu for reinstall. Will there be problems with permissions?
He'll probably copy as root, so everything will be root's. And doing the small changes by hand afterward is just the kind of problem he wanted to avoid.

As a first step you need to know what OS you are running.

@dmckee but of course every new screen session already has the recent environment variables

comment Updating screen session environment variables to reflect new graphical login?
Right, you need to do that in each shell in screen. AFAIK screen exposes no sockets or similar to communicate with running sessions from the outside.

comment Making nano accepting previous piped output as a file path
Because pipes connect output to inputs tldp.org/HOWTO/Bash-Prog-Intro-HOWTO-4.html. You want to substitute a nano parameter with a program output tldp.org/LDP/abs/html/commandsub.html.

comment LINUX: change number of lines/columns that are displayed in a terminal (without X)
@luca I don't know ubuntu's setup. But you might be able to play with this by adding the vga parameter like described e.g. here grumpymole.blogspot.com/2007/05/… (assuming ubuntu uses grub and their grub version is compatible with that howto).
