comment Login to Oracle database without username and password
Oracle also has the ability to authenticate to LDAP servers, e.g., Active Directory for domain authentication. You need a separate piece for that feature - added cost option :-/

It's not the only option, and it's a pretty dangerous one as well. A SYSDBA user can do ANYTHING to the database. Plus, you need to set up the logged in user to be able to log in with these privileges anyway.

comment Can't connect SQL*Plus to Oracle 10g from within VMWare Fusion VM
If you get 'Connection closed by foreign host' then I think Gary has hit on it when he guesses the listener is rejecting the connection or failing to get back through the NAT. Telnet to 1521 should just sit there waiting.

How's that going to work for music files? WinMerge is for text files, no?

+1 for the MusicBrainz Picard link alone (though the rest of the answer is good, too). I'm gonna use that!

How long have you W7 installed? I just wonder if you were able to run on your hardware without issue for any length of time. Were you able to get the data off your old drive? If your drive is indeed bad, but still readable, then perhaps you'll want to get R-Studio (rstudio.com) which has saved me several times.

This discussion is possibly of some value here: techsupportforum.com/forums/f16/sata-ata-atapi-98108.html. In particular, check out the first response by hwm54112. Have you tried not using SATA port 1?

Is this 64bit windows, or 32?

Can't answer that one. Perhaps the controller error is a symptom of a deeper issue with the system board? Or, does windows 7 think of the SATA controller as IDE for reporting purposes? Clearly, there is an issue with your hardware...
