OS experimenter

  • Windows 7&8 Superuser
  • Ubuntu (as many distros as I have time to try)
  • Chrome OS
  • OSX Learner

I reformat, on average, every two months and keep my system light and easy to replicate (and constantly backed up because you never know when I will screw up and run over my current OS).

Find me everywhere under the name of iamwpj.

comment UAC and old (XP) program called “colsetup”
According to this source, colsetup.exe is part of Robcad. It's located in %SystemDiskRoot%\Robcad\bin. It might be best to ensure Robcad is installed with a user who has administrative access. I have no experience with the program.

comment Faster processor or more RAM?
@athomsfere is right to suggest looking at performance monitor. You can see this in the Task Manager (ctrl + shift + esc) and select show more as well as take a look at the Performance and view the Resource Monitor (link at the bottom) for more performance information. Once you find the hyperactive culprit you might be able to come up with a quick solution (SSD as opposed to processor).

comment Battery: uncharging?
Depending on what you're doing it could just be a change in the wattage usage. If your graphics had to kick it up for some process your laptop might take a bit longer to finish charging. Or the estimation was slow to update for things that happened earlier. If you start seeing instances where your battery says it has 10 minutes left to charge for a period of 45 minutes, then it's time to look at the hardware.

Using a boot disk of TRK should provide an account unlocker.

comment Can I reuse my Office 2010 licence key when upgrading my OS to 8?
I find it best to simply disconnect from the internet when installing and use the provided phone number to activate the product. This is slightly more work, but it cuts back on the errors. It is perfectly legal to reuse it too, no worries there.

comment Install Multiple Skypes on same Pc
Have you simply tried to install it in another folder in the C:\? Then you can rename the shortcut and have "separate installs." Running them at the same time might cause an error to pop up regarding the same application already currently running.

comment Why does opening Process Explorer (or task manager) make operations complete quicker?
Does the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen request any task completion or resources to stop? I ask because often in the case of performance issues you have a delay before the CTRL+ALT+DEL screen will come up. It might be that this process will cause others to close.

comment Software for resuming a session after restart
You might be able to save some of these docs and .txts to the start up folder and just have them reopen when you restart. And then when you start up they will be open for edit. That means a simple Ctrl + S would save them.

There are some free alternatives that you should look at. These are probably good, but the integration into other Microsoft Office programs might be limited.
