comment What are the Windows A: and B: drives used for?
CP/M may not have had directories, but it did have 16 "user areas", so you had A0: though A15: as separate namespaces for files.

comment How can I know the privileges against a file in Linux?
Why do you say to run ls with -a? It does nothing in this case.

comment Removing some types of files recursively
find(1) has the -delete action (maybe just GNU find only) which will save all the subprocesses and cumbersome command line options. find . -name '*.exe' -delete

comment How to combine ls and cd commands in Unix
I'd suggest instead of reverse sorting and using tail, you use a normal sort and use head. That way it processes less data: cd $(ls -th | head -n 1) (I know the OP used -r|tail, but we can improve on that)

comment Why not ~/dls instead of ~/Downloads?
Rubbish. That's a backronym. See early manuals like in-ulm.de/~mascheck/bourne/v3 where directories such as /usr/dmr are used as examples (dmr is Dennis M Ritchie, a co-creator of Unix). Clearly, /usr is where user directories were located.

try running "strace top" to see where top is getting stuck. It may give you some clues.

You say you used to be able to manage your iPod with various software - what have you changed? Which are you running - stable/testing/unstable? Update your question with the "before" state.
