comment How to remove iso 9660 from USB?
Found what I was looking for: lkml.org/lkml/2009/3/16/363 ("Some SDD manufacturers (I don't know which ones) are actually examining the partition table and doing different things. I know this because they are permanently bricked if one writes an invalid partition table.")

comment Recommendation for USB based 802.11n network adapter with native driver support in Linux?
@kwutcha: all draft-n devices should be compatible to other draft-n devices, but we have no way of knowing how compatible they will be to the final 802.11n, since the standard has not come out yet.

comment Linux equivalent to robocopy?
You do not need to set up a rsync server, rsync over ssh automatically runs rsync on the remote machine in server mode (in a way which is used only for that connection, running under your own account, and closing automatically when it is done).

So far I have found one person mentioning the FAT dependency: linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Debian/2008-08/msg00761.html

I heard in the past about flash devices which became bricked if you ever used a non-FAT filesystem with them (because they used the FAT to know which blocks were unused and could be discarded). I have not heard of that for a long time, and I could not find anything about it with a quick Google search.

@ChrisF: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Analog_hole has way more than you ever wanted to know about it.

The technical term for this is "analog hole".
