I'm an Application Developer and Software Architect for a wide variety of software solutions including websites and desktop applications. Most recently focussed on a bespoke warehouse management system using C# 3.5 and SQL Server 2008.

Since my move to .NET I've become active in the community, attending monthly usergroup meetings and various conferences. I've even made a foray into speaking at usergroups about topics I am passionate about.

While I love experimenting with new tech and have a hobby project hosted on CodePlex, my current focus is less on specific new technologies and more on good principles and techniques.

When not at work I'm a family man, biker, amateur photographer, guitarist and of course, software developer.

comment External Blu Ray drive or internal + enclosure?
That was my question. One is a black box, the other is a SATA drive in an enclosure that "converts" as it were, SATA to USB. I was wondering if there were going to be driver issues, incompatibility issues etc. If the black-box solution is basically the same (albeit in a smaller box) then that's my question answered.

That's fair enough. The point really was that there's a lot more choice for internal drives, and all the external ones are in terrible plasticy boxes.

comment How suitable might my loft/attic be to install a network router and switch?
Yeah I know a router contains a processor etc. My point was there wouldn't be any high-power devices up there (i.e. 800 watt PC power supply on a server kicking out a load of heat). It makes sense what you say about it failing sooner, though. I guess I better find an alternative method. It might be that I put the patch panel in the loft and just route a bunch of cables down to the room below and install routers/switches etc there.

comment If I buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade, can I do multiple fresh installs?
Do you know if it's possible to purchase multiple licenses from the same machine (I want to get a license key for my Dad but can't run the install from his machine)?

comment Windows 7 fresh install blank screen
Ahh right okay. I've done this twice now with the same results. What's the path/filename of the setup log? C:\setup.log?

+1 for the safe mode suggestion. It got me a bit further but not all the way (I've updated my question with my findings).

comment Replace a failing disk in a RAID 0 array
Will Acronis also image the partition data? The new HDD obviously won't have that, so it'll need to put the partitions back before putting the data in.

comment Eee PC won't boot from USB
Thanks for the advice. I don't have an option to format as FAT or FAT16 - only FAT32, exFAT or NTFS. I've tried FAT32 and NTFS and neither worked. I'll try exFAT, then I'll do the whole thing over on an SD card and see if that's any better.

comment “C:\Program Files” on Windows Vista+ (x64)
Is there any reason why 64-bit software and 32-bit software had to be split in this way? I mean, it's just files on the disk, isn't it?

Can you just quickly mention how to mark a USB drive partition as "active"; I've not heard of that before.

comment Desktop icons rearrange after using remote desktop connection
No it's not a trick question. Of the two resolutions (the one I use when I'm physically in front of the machine, and the one that is set by RDP because my RDP client machine has a smaller screen), both are large enough that the icons needn't be moved around to make them fit.

Ahh, great stuff - I actually just tried that and I'm not sure I'm seeing a difference - see my updated question above.

But how does that explain that textpad opening the file and notepad opening the same file are getting different text?

Thanks for looking - I've updated the question.
