comment Netcat file transfer problem
scp may have been slow, but it most definitely had nothing to do with the encryption, and everything to do with the scp protocol being horrible inefficient. Again, netcat is buying you absolutely nothing other than being more complicated and less secure. Just use tar over ssh.

comment How can I join two simple home networks together using an ethernet cable?
You don't need a middle gateway, just put DD-WRT or similar on one of the gateways. Any replacement firmware that allows you to configure vlans will do. If network A is 192.168.1.x and B is 192.168.2.x, you would just need to configure a port on a new vlan on gateway A and give it an IP of 192.168.2.2. connect that port to gateway B. Then on gateway B add a static route for 192.168.1.x through 192.168.2.2.

comment Why can Dropbox be super fast compared to FTP?
What size, type, and number of files did you upload? How long did each of them take to upload? Where were you uploading the files to via FTP? Dropbox is not magic, the simplest explanation is that the FTP server you were uploading too has much less bandwidth than Amazon does.
