comment Why do I only get 300-400 Mbit/s on my 1000 Mbit/s network?
That "pcattcp" tool he is using is a piece of crap. My 900mhz linux netbook(which is probably as fast as his machine was in 2005) does 300MB/s over loopback.

comment How to test your backups against medium degeneration?
I don't think you know the meaning of "silent data corruption" The fact that you can recover from the backup does not mean the data has not been corrupted.

How does this detect silent data corruption?

That tool won't help at all to detect silent data corruption. Checksums are the way to go, not some tool that claims your drive is OK.

comment What changes do I need to make to my wireless network to avoid these 25s ping times?
do you mean 25 milliseconds? 25 seconds should never happen.. unless maybe this 'extend the network' mode puts the device into a 'store and forward' mode. This will do more harm than good and should be disabled.

comment Any Linux BitTorrent client with support for Magnet links?
magnet links are not about being trackerless, they are about being .torrent less. You can have a .torrent file that uses the DHT instead of a tracker. magnet links take this one step further and do away with the .torrent file entirely.

which "unable to connect page" there is more than one. Can you ping 8.8.8.8? What about a traceroute to 8.8.8.8?

comment Does “chmod 777 .* -R” chmod parent directories (..)?
ah, that brings us to another quirk of mine. I never. ever. ever. ever. run something like that, unless it is something harmless like grep. running a command like 'chown foo -r .' in the wrong directory can be disastrous. Going one directory up and typing the name of the directory you really mean to change forces you to pay more attention to what you are doing.
