I'm a passionate software engineering trying to understand it at a deeper level while working on my PhD at the CWI (Netherlands), where we try to improve the future using DSLs (checkout the Rascal - Meta Programming Language).

Languages I learned and still use: Rasal-MPL, C#, Java, Javascript, Ruby, C, C++, Matlab, LaTeX. (This list should be considered outdated when you're reading this ;-))

As a hobby I try to bridge our software to the physical world using arduino, read ebooks, and enjoy photography.

Let's go with your assumption that some-one who knows to try ubuntu doesn't know how to remove/uninstall windows by formatting (which is really simple, and supported when using a "boot-install")... How can the software problem still represent itself in a ubuntu live disk? In my opinion Joseph has tried to isolate a good part of the problem. Assuming that he can't remove (however you want to call it) Windows is a demeaning thing to assume.

I won't downvote, but can you explain how a software problem could exists in both windows an linux? And he has already formatted and reinstalled windows twice.

comment What do you put in your computer repair toolkit?
I've seen it working, but once I ran it on a drive which had hardware problems.. I could read about 80% before running SpinRite, but after running SpinRite for about 8 hours, the drive was fried... Lesson learned: try to get as many data out first, than run spinrite to fix your badsectors...
