comment Culprit of my slow system?
The idle process isn't taking any of your time. Your computer is probably waiting on something. Like, "stop Service X" but Service X needs to phone home to say "I'm stopping" before it stops and "home" is some dodgy server that's not always responding or fast. For a similar concept: blogs.technet.com/b/markrussinovich/archive/2012/07/02/…

Hit "Forward" and then change the email type to "HTML". "Save All Attachments" as much as you want.

Check the event log. You could also xperf startup or try some of the techniques mentioned here

comment Does recompiling a program produce a bit-for-bit identical binary?
@David The CLI spec requires it. Mono's C# compiler would have to do the same. Ditto for any VB .NET compiler.

It depends on the compiler. Some of them embed time stamps, so the answer is "no" for those.

comment Windows 8 disk usage is 100%
30 mb/s is a lot. Go to the performance tab, click resource monitor at the bottom, then look at the disk tab. Sort by total and see what files are being accessed. You can usually infer what's run amok.

comment List of Services for SQL Server 2012 Express
I believe VS2012 installs SQL Server Express LocalDB. So VS2013 could do the same.

comment Using a custom /etc/hosts, what IP address should I use to instantly time out? I'm running a web server on localhost
What problem are you trying to resolve that requires an IP address that times out instantly?

comment Does 64bit GNU/Linux have better performance?
So your results aren't really all that surprising. OP bought a machine with an AMD CPU and has concerns about performance? I agree, this is expected.

Little caches perform better than big ones, and more 32-bit entries will fit in a fixed-size cache than 64-bit ones. What if the host system has 128 GB of RAM and the size of the fixed-size cache is 64 GB? How much faster will the 32-bit system be now?

comment How do I retrieve a product key from another hard drive?
Just use one of the many tools that can do this. See magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder And FWIW, My friend's laptop's motherboard fried and he needs his Windows 7 product key Most laptops have a COA sticker with the product key on it. See it here (upside down, and an actual product key...)
