comment What's the best way to do a one-time Windows Vista backup in order to perform a clean Windows 7 install?
@John T: If I understand your dd answer, it creates a single file that is a bit-for-bit copy of the original disk. That's great for when you want to restore as-is to a fresh disk, not so great when you need to pick and choose. Good point about some files being uncopyable on a running system though.

comment How to change tab stops for a single paragraph in Microsoft Word 2007?
Thank you, this worked perfectly even though AutomaticallyUpdate was already False. Unfortunately I was forced to use a table instead of tabs because of other formatting problems.

This sounds entirely plausible. I got the document from someone else, so it could easily be set up differently than everything I've done on my own. And yes, it was the Normal style. Unfortunately it will probably be Monday before I can try this out. Thanks!

comment What are your favourite free fonts?
URW++ created a free version of Helvetica that is distributed with Ghostscript, although I think for trademark reasons they call it something different.

comment How can I copy a formula multiple times and always refer to the same cell?
You can put the $ in front of both the row and column designations. $A$1 will always refer to the same cell, $A1 will always refer to a row in the A column, and A$1 will always refer to a column in the 1 row.

comment Do all LCD monitors look bad when rotated 90 degrees?
I probably wasn't clear with my first comment. Different versions of TN can have different characteristics. It's possible for a manufacturer to substitute one panel for another in the same model LCD, so you can't even be sure of what you're getting. Non-TN panels are also available but are usually not seen due to their expense.

It's not enough to just say "TN" - this technology has many variations, and some will be worse than others.

comment Are there any LCD monitors with vertically oriented RGB stripes when in portrait orientation?
Good luck. The LCD panel manufacturers like to build for the greatest possible market, and that's vertical stripes on a landscape oriented screen.

comment Is there Linux support for TRIM on SSD drives?
Linus himself is a big fan of SSD drives, so I'd suspect them to be well supported. torvalds-family.blogspot.com/2008/10/…
