comment Should I turn my monitor off or leave it in stand-by?
@a sandwich, the only setting which might make a difference is the backlight brightness. Turn it down for longer life.

comment Is there a way to make IE7 default to ms-image-mode:bicubic?
Never did get this to work, but they finally upgraded to IE 8 so it's a moot point. Thanks for the answer.

comment Stop Microsoft Word 2010 from smoothing screenshots?
I believe that PDF files have a native embedded image resolution, so if you resize your images to match then Word might be able to skip a step. Unfortunately I fear the resulting PDF size might be unreasonable.

comment AVG 11 Free Doesn't Install
Maybe a virus is blocking the installation? I'm sure the virus writers know that the best defense is a good offense.

comment What are the differences between 2.5“ and 3.5” hard disks?
@Wil, the 8 inch size was never very popular, I'm surprised to see it show up in a picture like this. You should have seen the 14 inch drives though! Also the 5.25 seems stubbier than I remember.

comment How can I physically destroy data from a failed HDD?
This might not be adequate - the Curie temperature is higher than I thought - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curie_point

comment Does the PC power switch indicate CPU health?
@MaQleod, thanks for the tip. I bought a POST card for a lot more than it was worth, and the results didn't tell me more than I knew before. It was still a good suggestion though.

comment Does the PC power switch indicate CPU health?
Ah, I didn't know about the 4 second rule. I think that explains why it's still working.

comment Why are USB flash drives so much slower than solid-state drives?
Begs the question, what's the speed of a SSD when you put it into a USB enclosure?

comment Where is registry stored in windows 7?
No problem touching them, as long as it's read-only.

comment Where is registry stored in windows 7?
I don't understand why this was migrated from StackOverflow, since it seems not only the locations but the formats are desired, and the format is definitely a programming question.

comment Vista/7: Possible to DPI lie, but without the scaling?
@Ian, Virtual PC and XP mode are hardly the only virtual options available under Windows.

comment What is the current state of development for the FLAC codec?
I think the lack of DRM has ensured that flac would never be more than a niche, unfortunately.

comment Word doesn't convert non-Unicode characters as expected
A couple of questions: what are the characters that Word registers after the paste? What application created the original document? When they convert the font to Arial Unicode using that application, what does it display?

comment Word doesn't convert non-Unicode characters as expected
Cut and Paste issues can be related to programming, even if this specific question isn't. Substitute "my program" for "MS Word" and the topic doesn't really change.

comment Windows command FOR /F isn't working?
I figured out the problem before I saw this answer, but since it includes the actual solution (non-printable characters in the front) I'm selecting this as the accepted answer.

comment Windows command FOR /F isn't working?
Yes, that command shows me the contents of temp.txt. Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm unclear what I was supposed to learn by trying it.

comment Windows command FOR /F isn't working?
Yes, I am in the directory. I also tested with a full path to the file, but I'm trying to eliminate as many irrelevant details as possible.
