comment How does Netflix know my password?
@kasperd: Collisions can be generated on-demand for MD5‌, making it completely insecure. Note that this is not the same vulnerability as "finding out your password". Your argument is a straw man; please stop spreading misinformation.

comment My motherboard doesn't support AHCI, is IDE mode + SATA 2 much slower for new SDD/HDD/SSHD?
If you do not disable read/write caching, you are not testing AHCI, you're testing your OS's proficiency at caching.

You guys are using two different definitions of the term "one-way". There's the mathematical definition which simply means "not injective," and then there's the computer science definition which means "cryptographically secure." When discussing cryptographic hash functions we always use the second definition, so the statement "MD5 is no longer one-way" is correct.

Did you disable read/write caching when doing these tests? Otherwise you are measuring the completely wrong thing.

comment Will my “6-core CPU” motherboard support an 8-core CPU?
Er, I thought the whole point of the AM3+ socket-type was that it was backwards compatible with AM3 sockets, but also forward-compatible with the upcoming AM4 socket? At least, that's how it worked with AM2/AM2+.. But in either case, while this does solve my problem, it does not answer the question in the title, for anyone who finds this page via google, so I cannot mark it as correct.

comment Can my landlord access my personal network because he controls the upstream connection?
@Jason Anyone who can follow simple instructions can install custom firmware on home/soho routers. They could also use a linux box with two ethernet ports.

comment How can I tell which laptop touch-screens work well with a stylus (for drawing/taking notes)?
@DaveRook according to meta.superuser.com/a/5545/23668 this sort of question is on-topic: "However, a question that allows for a learning opportunity and that can be applied to various situations, of the form "how can I determine [for myself] which foo can do bar" has potential to be valuable."

I'm not sure why the close-vote; if you read past the first sentence, you'll see this isn't a shopping recommendation, it's about the different types of touch-screens
