comment How do I bypass Visual Studio 2005 SP1 failing to install on Windows 7?
VS2005 actually is compatible with Windows 7, I just misunderstood how to install the patch to SP1 for Vista.

Ok, thanks. I'll go with VS2008 for now.

Deciding on compiler versions is not something we dare leave to our IT-department.

Switching VS-versions is not something we can do lightly; we need to do it (as I understand it) more or less on a company-wide basis. We are, however, in the process of switching to VS2008, but I still need to be able to build with VS2005 now and then.

comment Aptitude keeps saying package installed when it was removed and purged
Why is that a no-no? They both use the same database, and probably share a substantial amount of code.

comment Linux grep or find usage
Not entirely true. The search string will only be expanded if there is a match, otherwise it is left unexpanded. Try "echo thisisnotafile*", for example.

comment Bad NTFS performance
I've benchmarked both ways, and while the virus scanner did have a measurable impact, it didn't explain the bad performance of NTFS.

comment Best SVN interface for Linux?
Note that SVN 1.6 allows you to abbreviate URLs on the command line, such as "svn copy ^/trunk ^/branches/hacks". This greatly reduces the amount of stuff to write when doing non-trivial stuff.
