Not entirely true. The search string will only be expanded if there is a match, otherwise it is left unexpanded. Try "echo thisisnotafile*", for example.

I've benchmarked both ways, and while the virus scanner did have a measurable impact, it didn't explain the bad performance of NTFS.

Note that SVN 1.6 allows you to abbreviate URLs on the command line, such as "svn copy ^/trunk ^/branches/hacks". This greatly reduces the amount of stuff to write when doing non-trivial stuff.

Well, I'm genuinely interested in why NTFS is performing badly. If the the answer is "do X to make it faster", then great, but I'd settle for understanding the problem.
