comment Sonicwall Global VPN Client fails to connect, despite successful connections from other computers from behind the same router
I tried fiddling around with the MTU, but it did not have any effect. Since the problem appeared/disappeared without any action on my part (AFAIK), I can only presume that the problem was ISP-related.

comment Sonicwall Global VPN Client fails to connect, despite successful connections from other computers from behind the same router
I disabled the firewall but that didn't help. I ran Wireshark on the laptop, but I couldn't see any outgoing traffic to the VPN server at all, however I did see a couple of ICMP replies coming back with "Destination unreachable (Fragmentation needed)". I lowered the MTU, but then I didn't see anything att all. It is as if the VPN-client is blocked from any and all network access.

The IP address of the VPN server can be pinged from the command line, so I think I've ruled that out.

comment Keyboard layout switching with synergy
Perhaps, but I've yet to find a hotkey which is not eaten. Synergy will (and should) by default eat all keystrokes, so I suspect that I need to instruct Synergy to explicitly pass certain keystrokes back to the server.

comment Keyboard layout switching with synergy
Sorry, but that doesn't work. The layout has to be switched on the server, or the mapping will not be correct. (At least not in my case.) Switching on the client will only affect input from the client's own keyboard.

comment EOL converter as a shell extension
Maybe, if I can squeeze in some time to experiment a little. Is there a way to keep the cmd window open after the command finishes?

Ok. Thanks, anyway.

comment EOL converter as a shell extension
I opted for the "unix2dos" variant. The "TYPE" variant didn't work. Will it correctly detect file with mixed EOL conventions?

Here's a file with mixed line-endings: dl.dropbox.com/u/2113034/crlf.txt

Unfortunately Notepad++ cannot convert files with mixed line-endings. If there are both LF and CRLF in a file, it will refuse to directly convert to Windows. You have to first convert to Unix, and then back to Windows. Annoying.

Why? What does it do?

comment Sharing VirtualBox snapshots
I'm using linux, but I need to be able to send the snapshots to windows machines. And I would prefer not to have to reformat the harddrives of my machine.

Yes, but the problem is in "just copying the snapshot file". I tried copying the snapshot file, but it doesn't appear in the UI.

ZFS is pretty cool, yes, but not really a solution to my problem.

I meant if it was possible to export the snapshots incrementally, such that you don't need to transport the entire appliance (which is ~4GB). I will clarify the question.

comment How do I bypass Visual Studio 2005 SP1 failing to install on Windows 7?
VS2005 actually is compatible with Windows 7, I just misunderstood how to install the patch to SP1 for Vista.

Ok, thanks. I'll go with VS2008 for now.

Deciding on compiler versions is not something we dare leave to our IT-department.

Switching VS-versions is not something we can do lightly; we need to do it (as I understand it) more or less on a company-wide basis. We are, however, in the process of switching to VS2008, but I still need to be able to build with VS2005 now and then.

comment Aptitude keeps saying package installed when it was removed and purged
Why is that a no-no? They both use the same database, and probably share a substantial amount of code.
