comment Skype doesn't connect through OpenVPN
It might. I'm not sure since I don't run a firewall on the Linux client, and I don't know if I would have to do something to manually open a port in Windows. Maybe I'll look into that.

comment Suppressing stderr in GNU Parallel
I'm using parallel 20151122 with the --bar option and it does not suppress standard error.

comment What happens when a PC is turning off?
This may interest you: some Linux systems show step-by-step updates of what the system does when it's shutting down. Here are a couple of examples: 1 2 (though neither of these shows the complete shutdown procedure; there are more items that come before). Windows goes through similar steps.

comment Mark file as “uncommitable” with Git
Indeed, although recommended practice is not to rely on having this prevention in place (i.e. use `.gitignore instead).

comment How can a file size be zero?
@DavidSchwartz confirming that it also works on OS X, which is probably the most common UNIX-like OS (just to dispel any misconceptions that this is some wacky quirk of niche operating systems)

comment How do I add a number at the end of every line in Notepad++?
@Ditto I make no claim to be an average user, but this seems considerably less intuitive than regular expressions. Then again, xkcd.com/1171

comment Pass text to program expecting a file
It's not clear from the question whether the command accepts input on stdin, and if not, this isn't going to work. I hope the OP clarifies.

comment Pass text to program expecting a file
It may be worth noting that the program has to be written to interpret - this way - it's not a feature of the shell or the operating system. Though of course most standard Linux utilities do follow this convention, as far as I know.

comment How long would it take to break a 1024 bit OpenPGP encrypted email?
I have to ask... is the misspelling of "asymmetric" intentional?

comment Force Windows 8 to use UTC when dealing with BIOS clock
That software seems to be a repackaging of the official NTP distribution, with some extras. Anyway, I used it and also found it to work.

comment Where are shell functions stored on Linux?
I don't know if it might be worth emphasizing that the executable code for builtin commands like cd is contained within the shell program itself, e.g. within the file /bin/bash if that is your shell. (I do think your wording here is clear, but I've seen people get confused by all sorts of things.)

comment Firefox “Untrusted Connection” warnings when visiting reputable HTTPS sites when using child's account
@Alexander I don't know exactly how Family Safety works, but from what I understand, it's possible that you would not be notified. Basically, when using the procedure described in the answer, the connection goes from Firefox to Family Safety to Google. Firefox checks (with some caveats) that the connection from it to Family Safety is secure. But it does not, and cannot, check that the connection from Family Safety to Google is secure. Family Safety would have to do that check. I don't know whether it does or not.
