I actually ended up using Fences (thanks to the SU related answers that popped up when I asked the question). This answer seems to be the "correct" answer although as a fan of Fences now, I think I'll stick with it.

I actually tried Fences, and it has an option to restore the desktop when a resize occurs ;-) best of all, it has a snapshot setting that will let you restore any arrangement!

@Bogdan_Ch - that is scary... IE8 compatibility mode should be almost exactly like IE7... Are there many sites you know of that don't work in compatibility mode?

For the drive list, yes if I open the drop down... and wait... and wait while it renders I can get access but a single click on a trail would be preferred. For the ../../ bit I can't navigate up 2 or 3 or 4 folders to look somewhere... i'm not sure how your Windows works but I can't navigate up using "../" it pops up an alert "The above file name is invalid"
