Sure, that is true in the very narrow sense, but emacs24 clearly is present. His whole question-and-self-answer is a little weak in general.

That is not how the site works. This answer is not appropriate and misleading. Moreover, it is a little odd that you seem to refuse to upvote my answer.

Well ... see my answer, and comments. I think at this point you should just delete this own-answer attempt.

Well, first off the OP asked for emacs 24, not snapshot. Second, emacs 24 is already in his Ubuntu release.

For this task, you may have confused dpkg with something like apt-cache search emacs. Try that.

No, just sudo apt-get install emacs24. What I did was just for display. You can of course also use aptitude, or the Ubuntu Software Center, or whatever other interface to the package system you use.

Seriously, this is a hard problem which has been solved pretty well by ssh authentication. I'd use that solution.

Look, I've been a Debian developer/maintainer since 1995 too. We used to have bash as a default, we switched to simpler shells for a variety of reason. I have been using /bin/bash as my shell all those years on all machines. You need a more concrete argument.

Nonsense. Running Linux since '94 here. Never busted /etc/passwd.

Yo, what's up with the drive-by downvote? Eg Ubuntu does default to /bin/sh being /bin/dash. And for what it is worth the other two answers are identical and achive the same end by different means. Whatever.

comment What are the differences between installing Python via apt-get and compiling, installing from source?
OTOH there are often "fill-in" repositories for when you need the newest of a particular application. Ubuntu does that well with PPAs off launchpad.
