Avid Emacs and Vim hacker (I use Emacs with Evil to get the best of both worlds ;)

I'm experienced with Python, C#, Java, and Javascript, and have dabbled in C++, C, objective-C, Lisp, Ruby, Ocaml, and Scala. While I have a keen interest for all things code, I'm especially interested in the design and creation of programming languages themselves.

comment What is the relationship between Unix, Linux, Ubuntu and Debian?
You can choose to install a GUI when you install Debian. It took me less than an hour to get Gnome and working wifi on my laptop, at which point you have default applications comparable to Ubuntu. To be fair, if you're terrified of the command line and don't want to learn, Ubuntu's a better choice.

comment Emacs eshell over SSH not obeying key commands or elisp
This solved my problem: C-x C-f user@host.com:~, M-x shell. It's not eshell, but it does give proper cd and tab completion.

This works as you describe, but if I do cd /ssh:user@host.com:~ followed by cd / I end up back in my local root directory, presumably because I'm using eshell's cd. However, *cd gives the error cd: external command not found. Do you know of a way to get tab completion AND proper command behaviour, or is eshell the wrong tool for this?

Changing the accepted answer to this. If you want fine-grained control over your mappings Pentadactyl is absolutely the way to go.

comment Using Emacs align-regexp to format tables
If you're trying to cross-pollinate Emacs and Vi, I highly recommend Evil, the most complete Vim emulation package for Emacs. You'll still need to find separate plugins for Vim and Emacs, but you'll be able to use the Vim keybindings in both.
