Thanks @SamHocevar. I've started another bounty so that I can award you, but you'll have to wait the minimum one day before I can award it.

@SamHocevar I'm not sure, good question. My /etc/locale.conf contains LANG="en_GB.UTF-8" and LC_COLLATE="C". I use the UK English locale with a custom dvp layout.

comment Prevent zsh from trying to expand everything
Maybe I shouldn't, but it is quite tempting to do so. I used to think that I shouldn't have lots of aliases either. But in the end, all that matters is how long it takes for me to type in a command on my machine.

comment How to display a single terminal in two columns?
You could get the two sides showing the same terminal by splitting a terminal multiplexer, like tmux, nesting two instances and attaching them both to the same socket. Keeping one of the two scrolled up is the challenging part.

Awesome, this is exactly what I needed. I keep forgetting that dd works on ordinary files as well :) (I can accept your answer in two minutes.)

comment Strange sound behavior
I don't see the mixer in your video, but I assume the volume level indicator is not changing, it is only the volume itself that is changing? Also, can you be sure it comes from alsa, and not something else, like a buggy mp3 codec or something?

Yes, I have set --color=auto in my .bashrc. Using --color=always with cut did the trick.

comment Use Caps Lock LED as HDD LED (or custom) indicator
While I was able to run AutoHotkey with Wine, for some reason it did not light up my LEDs (though no error messages were logged). Also, even if it would work, having to pipe through wine every couple of milliseconds, or having a wine process running all the time is not very optimal, especially compared to the other solution that uses setleds. Still, this might be a solution for windoze users, so thanks for posting.

Thank you for this nice answer, this solution works perfectly for me, and is a good example that I can easily change to whatever I need. A already have sys-apps/kbd installed, so it worked out of the box. You deserve all the bounty I could give :)

comment How to type double acute characters using compose
Thanks, in's working - I just didn't know how to look up the combination. Also, it turns out that Compose+=+e is the euro sign (€), which is also much useful, esp. in Europe.

The HDD LED was just an example. The main idea is that I have at unused LED on my keyboard that I'd like to control. Please look at my edits.

comment Use Caps Lock LED as HDD LED (or custom) indicator
Not a bad idea altogether, but 1. I could just use the keyboard led, I don't think I need another led from an old case, and 2. I want there to be only one USB cable connecting my keyboard. Or better yet - think wireless keyboard.

You were right. A simple "sudo mount devpts /dev/pts -t devpts" solved my problem. Not sure why is devpts not auto-mounted though...
