Yep I reinstalled old official samsung drivers and everything seems to be fine now. I'll wait a few more days before closing the question. In any case thank you for your help!

comment Monitor keeps entering power saving mode
at first I had GeForce drivers downloaded from Samsung (or maybe somwehere else but explicitly stated "for Samsung R510" anyway). A day before the problem started I updated these drivers from NVidia website since they were outdated badly and some games refused to run with this explicit reason. Is it possible that official NVidia drivers are not meant for the, I dont know, laptop version of gpu? But I updated them using NVidia's auto-detect-your-gpu software maybe this can be part of the problem as well? And yes I ran monitor for 8+ hours on another pc, all was fine.

I had a chance to test it on another machine just now, and so far it seems to be working fine.

comment sorry, the maximum allowed clients from your host (10) are already connected" FTP error
I get this connecting to a few different servers (basically every server I need), and I do not have control over the server. Yes the server has the limit apparently, so I want my client to obey that limit or something. And I doubt the server settings needs any change because all works fine from windows clients.

Yes games did work properly before, as far as I know. Thank you all for your responses, I will try to look more into it, doing all the procedures you listed.

comment Repair Ubuntu installation
@~quack: in this case, apt-get shows error about not finding ubuntu-desktop ("...but it was referenced in another package" and so on). I double checked sources.list, I have commented out everything but lines starting with apt cdrom. If ubuntu-desktop is supposed not to be in LiveCD, maybe you could give me short list of package names I need to install to get at least desktop gui and/or internet working, please?

I added CD-Rom and it looked like worked, i.e., no errors, some packages found. But after it when I tried apt-get install ubuntu-desktop, apt was still trying to fetch it from internet... maybe I need to configure something or use command with some arguments to make it use cd?

I'm pretty sure there was no such option, I was looking precisely for something like that. Unless it is in some not so obvious place?
