comment Samsung monitor displays only “Check Signal Cable”
Yes, this worked for me. My s24a300bl stopped working after a few weeks of disuse. Windows identified it, but I just got the "Check Signal Cable" message. After installing the newest firmware, it works fine.

comment Print over remote CUPS server, but just show a subset of the printers
@Dilaton: Well done! I'm pretty busy with my thesis at the moment, but I'll definitely have a look. PS: kinda funny misuse of the comment area, we should delete this comments if possible. And apologies to the superuser.com users :-) !

comment Very high delays when browsing samba share, how to speed up?
Currently Wifi, but the connection is good, and that's not the problem. I think I've found the solution, although I don't know how it works. Will post it shortly.

comment Format numbers in different locale (with period instead of comma as decimal separator)
Exactly, I want the numbers to display with a period on my German machine, since I want to write an English document. (The readers of the document don't know or care what machine I'm using, they will just complain that the decimal separators are wrong.) The numbers display correctly on English (American) systems.

comment Why are there no matte touchscreens?
@random and others: Why was this closed?! Surely this can be answered with facts. I'm explicitly asking for a technical reason or a quotation. It's not like I'm asking what kind of screen is better...

comment Why are there no matte touchscreens?
Close voter, would you care to explain your vote? I checked before asking that hardware questions are on topic on this site, and I believe this is the most appropriate SE site for the question. I'm not looking for a discussion, but an objective answer from an authoritative source (like "the molybdenum in the matte screen reverses the polarity of the touchscreen" or "Apple has a patent and lets nobody build them").

comment Why are there no matte touchscreens?
@DanielRHicks Yes, you can. If you look at the kind of screens used in factories for example, they are usually matte, and when they get dusty or grimey they can be washed off just like any other plastic surface. They are not especially rough or dirt-attracting, and in fact you don't see oil films or fingerprints on them as easily, so you don't even have to keep them as clean as glossy displays. Nearly all rugged hardware that works in dirty environments has that kind of screen for that reason. (I might be wrong of course, but I'd really like to see a source/test to back that up.)

comment Runas Windows Explorer in Windows 7
Thanks, this actually works. You might want to install PrivBar which is a toolbar for explorer that shows with which priviliges it's running. Also, note that you can use "Run as admin" as opposed to "Run as..." + "User: Administrator".

comment Prevent “document expired” message and just show the expired page?
But it does cache the last state, at least in some circumstances. Try this: gist.github.com/jdmansour/5578079 . At least the DOM is preserved.

comment Prevent “document expired” message and just show the expired page?
@sjrco: 1) yes, but not 2). I'd like to be able to click back and see what was there (same page state) before I navigated away. (That works on some pages even though they have been modified by js, or the user filled out forms, so the browser must save the modified document under some circumstances). I don't want the browser to silently resend data. I do want to suppress modal dialogs when it doesn't resend data, though.

Well, then by extension I'm asking how to make Firefox also cache the document :-).

comment Can I put Windows on a new Mac Book?
@PratyushNalam: Depends. It violates the EULA (End-User-License-Agreement). However, at least in my country (Germany) it is debated if those terms are enforceable. It's very much a grey zone. I wouldn't use a Hackintosh in a corporate setting, but privately there should be no problem.

This is too late to help you, but as a general reference you can find a list of compatible hardware on wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Main_Page .

comment x86 emulator on ARM for windows 8
Why was this closed? This question can be answered objectively... There are no technical hurdles that make this impossible. You could cross-compile QEMU for ARM for example. The practical problems are: You'd have to hack the Windows RT device to make it run your application (since it would be a win32 / non-winrt app), or obtain a testing/microsoft signature. Also, performance would likely be not so good (it should be okay for some office/productivity apps, but not for games).

comment Boot Camp but for windows
OS X's EULA is invalid and unenforcable in many European countries. (Also, technically you can install OS X without violating the EULA, if you simply don't accept the EULA ;-)).

comment Enable click-and-drag scrolling in Windows 8 / Metro?
You clicked with the middle mouse button and then entered the scrolling mode of IE? I meant something different: In the 'Metro' interface, press the left mouse button on the background, don't release it yet, and move it to the left. I'd expect the screen to scroll to the left (revealing new content on the right), exactly like it would have if I had touched and swiped the screen.

comment Caching in modern browsers sucks, why and how to fix?
@DanielBeck: I know, this, and the fact that many websites nowadays have logins makes it a lot harder. But even on pages with AJAX, the browser saves the document state in memory and can reload it when you press "Back" or "Forward". It could just take a snapshot of that. I don't expect dynamic stuff (e.g. GMail) to work.

comment Rattling noise like hard disk, but something else. What is it?
@Turix: Thanks, the case fans are definitely not too high quality, and I'll check them. However, I think it's still funny that the noise goes away when I start a benchmark... (PS: is there a "not" missing in the third paragraph before "necessarily"?)

comment Multiple tuner card for faster switching (HTPC)?
Hmm, I was thinking that you could completely "tune in" to multiple channels at once (decode and buffer enough frames to display), continue to decode them in the background, and then just put a different one on the screen when a button is pressed. Like picture-in-picture internally, but you're only really viewing one at a time. But I guess that won't work...
