1. I know about the persistence. 2. Your example does work, but adds complexity running command(in my opinion). I guess I now know this, but I would like to have a simple bash file which I can run without this source.

I fixed this already using echo -e '\0033\0143' thanks to superuser.com/questions/122911/bash-reset-and-clear-commands/…, but I still would like to know what this error means and how to fix this. Many thanks.

comment Compaq R4000 laptop randomly locking up
Okay that sucks. My advise then is, try it with a fresh install of for example ubuntu. Try disabling as much as devices as possible. Because it is weird that your pc won't crash with memtest. So maybe it is a I/O device or something that's is flakky, but not CPU/MEM which are essentials parts of a PC.

comment Is it possible to use a dual processor computer as your desktop?
I also don't think CPU utilization is the problem most of the times. Better good a processor with a large cache and a shit load of memory so that swapping/disc I/O is not necessary.

Happy it worked for you. Too bad you have to go through a lot of hoops. Hopefully somebody else knows of a better solution, but for right now problem solved I guess :)
