comment Mac always boots with incorrect display gamma (for years now including Lion)
How did you make those migrations? Things to try: Make a new user account, boot the machine and log into it. Does the issue persist? Boot from your install disk. Does the issue persist?

comment Main Imac Screen black external ok
It sounds like you didn't discover the cause of the original occurence, but that checking the display connector may have fixed something? Is there any reason to suspect connector issues again (f/ex, if you'd been moving the machine alot)? Otherwise, my next thought is to backup, reinstall SL and see if normal behavior returns (suggesting drivers in Lion) or not (suggesting hardware). Bit of PITA, but maybe less so than opening the box again.

Did anything unusual precede this (gradual degradation, just woke up one day this way, software installs or updates, etc.)?

comment After turning my monitor off and on, it will display only a white screen
Sounds like the graphics-card connector - or components that drive it - used by the first monitor. Is it possible to try the monitor on another system, or a known-good graphics with your system? But I'd say the graphics card, being newer, is more suspect.

You've pretty much isolated the problem to the monitor (and perhaps the cable, if you swapped that too). Unless the swapped in monitor connects to your graphics card differently (analog vs. digital, f/ex), in which case it could be an early death of that part of the new graphics card. Have you tried checking its setup options, or even whether the setup page can display? If none of that pans out, I'd say monitor died.

Yes - moving a tiny link is much faster than copying the file's contents.

comment Is a truecrypt container inside a virtual machine more secure?
@Sebastian, I'm not sure. I see your point about the 'mount' being on the guest and less accessible. I was addressing the container itself, which, kept on the host, would be equally available to host attacks no matter which OS was accessing it; and that strong encryption and good back-ups minimized the risk improper access or of damage.

But what advantage does that have over creating it in the host (which I think is perfectly acceptable solution, BTW)? The container is on the host in either case. Making sure your container is well encrypted, and frequently backed up are your best defenses.
