I'm just a simple IT guy, who does a bit of programming on the side.

You don't need the A records for www and test if you have the default (@) pointing there, it's just redundant. Doesn't hurt either way.

comment What's this start up item?
Probably something in one of the Startup folders, or in the standard registry locations.

comment How risky it is to have a personal server with ssh opened to the Internet?
I think you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned that you don't have the time or inclination to become an expert in $TECHNOLOGY security; this is the primary reason to use a hosted solution. The only other common argument in evaluating in-house vs hosting is the cost. Since github and the like are free, you're essentially giving up your personal time just to gain the knowledge of how to run a git repo. We can't tell you what you should be doing with your personal time, but in a professional situation this would make no sense. (caveat emptor: complicated situations have more variables).

So why not run fsck with sudo?? Also, why are you trying to fix Windows from Linux?? Why aren't you using the Windows CD that came with your computer?

comment issue setting up home server
Suggestions: Nobody hosts websites on OSX (Apple.com is run on Linux). Use Windows/IIS or *nix/Apache/nginx/etc. Run the "server" in a VM using VirtualBox or similar. There are guides around to walk you through the process. Check out Super User, Unix & Linux, and Ask Different for more help too. As for the "problem", your router almost certainly can't hairpin NAT. Also, hosting websites on a MBA is a terrible idea and a good way to get a virus.

"large" is pretty meaningless - I've heard people refer to 100MB files as large. Excuse the brainfart, I meant to recommend exFAT, which is really just FAT32 with some minor tweaks, including support for exabyte files.

ADSL uses OFDM modulation, but I wouldn't consider that Analog... unless you also consider WiFi, Cellphones, and Bluetooth to be "analog" too.
