Too much magic. Only customizing backup-directory-alist's value is needed. Type M-x customize-variable backup-directory-alist and set to the preferred "catchall" directory. No need for dotemacs editing.

@Josh: Both accounts are administrators. Firewall is disabled. In Finder I only see shared folders that are not on the USB drive.

For me, the disk identifier is the volume label (MyDisk), which is the same as the mount point under /mnt, and not the device name under /dev, which is /dev/disk2.
