comment How Unix is Mac OS X?
I am switching to a Mac because of this. However, I really want to see their future OS versions (Yosemite, etc) pass the latest UNIX specification.

comment External HDD connecting via USB disconnects wireless LAN connection
Just tried it on another USB3 port with the cable. Far from the PC. Same problem, it disconnects me from the router and won't connect again as long as I have the drive powered up. This rules out the electromagnetic interference hypothesis, it should be a hardware conflict. But where should I look? It's a USB device that provokes a NIC issue. How is this even possible?

Done it. No new drivers exist for the NIC, I have the latest. Is it possible to have a USB/NIC controller conflict of some kind? I will try to connect the drive on another USB port to check this eventuality.

Well, Windows should advise me if new drivers exist for my NIC (it did so a couple of weeks ago). Updating the drivers of the HDD (add-on unit)? Are there drivers for an external USB driver?

Well, silly me. It seems that I COULD change the driver from Properties. Nevertheless, I have to report this now: by choosing the dedicated driver for my external monitor when I revert to the laptop's it still shows the driver as the Samsung one. I hope that won't fry my notebook's monitor due to some illegal high setting. :-/

Thank you for your suggestions. But perhaps I know why it's doing this. Check out the comment in the original question. Since I use one computer and two monitors (the laptop's and this external I'm trying to choose the driver) with the same graphics card, it might choose the common denominator which is a Generic PnP monitor. I'm not duplicating my screens, I use only one at a time, but that might be enough to prevent the system from letting me choose the dedicated driver. Just a guess.

Hmm, I did that the first time. I have thought of a reason actually. It might be my case. As I said in my Postscript, I'm using the new monitor to compliment a notebook. Could it be that it won't choose (it's already installed as I said) the new driver because the Generic PnP Monitor fits both the external and the integrated (on the laptop) monitor?
