comment How to backup SVN repository from one server to another
Nevertheless we've been stuck with 1.6 in our company until quite recently, ourselves. The version worked "good enough", so quite frankly they were not "too outdated".

There are actually a number of perfectly good reasons why people might be using old software. Corporate environments, for example, where a migration to a newer version might affect thousands of systems and does cost real money, are usually slow to jump to new versions. (That's one of the reasons why "release early, release often" doesn't cut it in the corporate environs.)

comment Invoking vi through find | xargs breaks my terminal. Why?
The main question was "why", not "how to avoid it", and it's been answered to satisfaction two and a half years ago.

Shoutout to moderator slhck, who deemed it necessary to delete a 2 1/2 years old answer for "off topic"; apparently he knew better what my question was about than myself.

comment How to set umask globally?
I was under the impression that /etc/profile wouldn't do for X11, as it would be only sourced by the appropriate shell environments. Since this answer did work for me, seems I was wrong. ;-) The file I actually ended up editing (as I'm running a Linux Mint / Ubuntu) was /etc/profile.d/umask, which is sourced by /etc/profile (and results in my edits not getting nuked with the next system update of the latter). Thanks!

comment Why “ grep * ” not working?
@triplee: I don't discuss three vs. four space indenting, or eqyptian vs. ANSI brackets either when answering, unless it's topical. There is a fine line between being verbosely helpful and being condescending.

comment Why “ grep * ” not working?
@tripleee: I've seen this "award" tossed around with glee on sites like SO. I don't think it is appropriate. We're not talking about production code here; the cat in this example is a generic stand-in for "when I'm grepping some arbitrary standard input". An answer is easier to comprehend when it doesn't turn an abstract example into something else entirely just for the sake of showing off your leet skills of avoiding "unnecessary" uses of cat -- but sticks with the original code and shows the few twists that are actually related to the core of the question.
