Mainly a systems security guy with some Perl knowledge.

I'm reading through SICP and K&R right now. I wish someone had shown me SICP earlier in my career. Just Chapter 1 has been blowing my mind.

comment What's better a better VM app: VMWare, Parallels or Virtual PC
The Vmware Workstation snapshot tree alone makes it worth the money to me. It's just amazingly useful.

+1 - For ~5 hosts, a personal DNS server is some serious overkill.

From your description, it could be a number of things. Do you have a backup? I hope you aren't posting here from that computer. If this is a failing drive, stop using it immediately and use a different computer to research the problem.

I thought you said the Xbox was connected directly to one interface, while you have another interface for the home network? If that's the case, the twitter client isn't going to keep the interface for the xbox up and running. Did you check the power settings for the xbox interface?

comment Which rootkit cleaner do you recommend for Windows XP?
Oh, and +1 -- have rootkit == nuke and pave from safe media. You just can't know if it's all gone anymore. A/V is a crutch.

Ironically enough, the best protection against EEPROM rootkits is old-school jumpers -- set it read-only with a jumper and that infection just isn't going to happen. Not sure if board manufacturers will be bringing them back anytime soon though -- they're probably hanging out with Betamax tapes at this point.

comment From within telnet (putty), can I download a file to my computer?
Anytime you accidentally blow away the IOS image on a Cisco device.. you'll get to practice your xmodem skillz. Only made that mistake once.. but I've helped others fix theirs since then.
