I'm a university student studying pharmacy.

I've worked part-time in my university's computer science and mathematics departments' respective computer squads for 4 years. I'm also what you could call a "geek", having poked around in every flavor of windows between 3.11 and 8, Fedoras 8-12, and OS X 10.6.

I've played the piano for 15 years, and I've been singing in choirs for most of that time as well. Over the years, I've picked up drums, mallet percussion, and guitar, to varying levels of accomplishment.

What program and OS are you using? It's hard to pinpoint an issue when we don't have any information...

comment Is it safe to install both Homebrew and Macports on the same machine?
I've only had a very cursory look at homebrew, but if you changed the default install location for homebrew from /usr/local to something like /opt/homebrew/usr/local, would that problem be avoided?

comment Is it okay to leave my laptop plugged into an adapter even if it says 'not charging'?
I had an HP laptop where the battery was right between the CPU and GPU.....not a good place, and you could feel it heat up like crazy. Aside from the heat problem, there's no reason to take the battery out.

comment Third party boot loader
I'd like to point out a subtlety that isn't being made; while GRUB is packaged with Ubuntu, it is not associated with Ubuntu (it's a part of the GNU project). It's a free program developed by separate individuals that Ubuntu throws in for convenience. This is unlike Microsoft's Windows Boot Manager or NTLDR, which are developed by Microsoft explicitly for Windows.

comment software creating top view maps
In a word, the UI. Just drawing a line is more complicated than it needs to be. The "fill" tool doesn't fill properly (leaves a 3-px border of unfilled space), forcing me to use colored rectangles to fill in the map. The software does work (for a given value of "work"), and you can use it effectively, but it's almost not worth it. Things that work in most visual editor don't behave quite the same, and these small changes drive me nuts. It's like switching from QWERTY to AZERTY; it almost works, but it's still irritating. And please pardon the rant, I've been using it for 4 hours straight...

I've been working on a map for the past week using Inkscape. The software has been driving me nuts, although it does "work" (as in, if you put enough effort in, it'll do what you want....eventually). I'd go with Illustrator, if you have the budget.

comment search an ntfs partition for files from linux
@slartibartfast: I don't believe it's necessary, but thanks for pointing it out; it's good to know if the results don't come out as expected. BTW, I know you must get this a lot, but I personally found the fjords rather delightful.

a probably faster way to do the same thing: go to chrome://plugins (in firefox, that would be about:plugins), and disable the acrobat reader plugin

@kevin: quite right, the "quickly" was meant to explicitly convey "not simultaneously".
