comment Can the volume change when I plug in headphones?
hmmm, this is an interesting problem. My first line of attack would be to see if there is a file in /sys or /proc that changes when you plug in headphones, and then monitor that. Or you could bind a volume-lowering script to a hotkey and run it whenever you plug in your headphones.

comment Windows 7 PC no longers goes into power saving mode
Interesting....my windows 7 machine just started acting similarly, as well. I had chalked it up to my not being able to tell how long it had been idle....

comment Where to download unix command?
I'd assume that it's a typo, and that he meant 'mvdir is obsolete'

comment Laptop screen brightness stuck
Unfortunately, this seems to point to some malfunction beyond that of a simple keyboard or OS fault. I'd guess that the problem is localized to the graphics card and its firmware, but I've no real basis for that guess. If you've any sort of warranty on the components in your laptop, my inexpert opinion that replacing the graphics card and/or motherboard is the way to go. Sorry to not be any more help!

comment Laptop screen brightness stuck
I was thinking something along the lines of 'echo -n 100 > /proc/acpi/video/VGA/LCD/brightness', but I'm unsure whether or not the brightness file is still in the same location. The /proc directory, from what I've read, does get rearranged from time to time. The integer should be any number from 0 to 100, according to linuxscrew.com/2007/10/25/…

comment Laptop screen brightness stuck
Let us know how attempting to change the brightness via software goes. In windows 7, there should be a slider that allows you to change the brightness via software controls (left-click on the battery icon in the system tray, then left-click on the "adjust screen brightness" link. In linux, there are bios-level controls buried somewhere in /proc, depending on the version of the kernel you're using.

comment How to Create an XML File from an Excel File
I'm sure there's a way to do this with excel macros, but I'm at a complete loss for how to do it, because I don't have excel. At the least, it's a place to start looking.

comment Reclaiming disk space on Windows
It's the tradeoff between getting the space I need NOW, unsafely, and getting the space I need whenever vista feels like giving it back to me (never, or close enough to never in my experience). Like I've implied, it's not always a good idea, merely an available method.

comment Webcam nightmare on LINUX
I've had fairly horrible luck with f10 and webcams. If at all possible, I'd suggest upgrading to f11 or 12, which has far more robust support.
