I'm a university student studying pharmacy.

I've worked part-time in my university's computer science and mathematics departments' respective computer squads for 4 years. I'm also what you could call a "geek", having poked around in every flavor of windows between 3.11 and 8, Fedoras 8-12, and OS X 10.6.

I've played the piano for 15 years, and I've been singing in choirs for most of that time as well. Over the years, I've picked up drums, mallet percussion, and guitar, to varying levels of accomplishment.

Thank you for a very informative and thorough answer. I hadn't realized how the various encoding methods work, and it seems fairly interesting. It's something to read about, at the very least.

comment Reclaiming disk space on Windows
Thanks for the advice! However, the purpose of this was to get rid of several gigs of files that I had deleted a year ago that was lingering in the directory. I'm not even sure if it disabled the restore points, but I suspect it might have.

comment Ubuntu fails to mount USB drive
OK, I was just thinking, if the full weight of the USB cord is supported only by the port, it might break the connection, while lighter devices wouldn't put the same force on the port. But like you said, it's unlikely.

comment Fedora ifup and Network Manager
Is the NetworkManager service running when you try to manually configure the connection? When I tried to manually set my networks in F9, I'd run into a tug-of-war between my own configuration and NetworkManager

comment How to force NetworkManager to make a connection before login?
I think that having them in the same package is actually essential; what's the point of giving us a service if you don't give us a method to control it? I'd argue in the opposite direction; cNetworkManager should also be in the NetworkManager package, for when you need to control your wireless card when X doesn't run (this has happened to me an emnbarrasingly large number of times)

This is a good solution, but there are also caveats with this. The NetworkManager and network services should not be run at the same time; they'll both try to control the wireless hardware at the same time and do weird things. What you could do is enable the network service by default, and only enable networkamanager when it's required.

@richard My apologies. I seem to have misjudged your intended tone from the wording of your response. :)
