comment How to increase contrast of Windows 7 Menu Item highlight
Changing wrong monitor settings (brightness and contrast) is a good suggestion!

I think these parameters are taken into account only if the user is not using an Aero style. It may only work with "Windows Classic" theme.

comment git bash icon on windows 7
I did not try to rebuild the icon cache, but creating a new shortcut by myself did the trick.

comment git bash icon on windows 7
The target is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\bin\sh.exe" --login -i. I created a new shortcut "sh" in the same location as the "Git Bash" shortcut (C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Git), and it is working! I diffed the files and they do differ, but not visibly in links' properties dialog. The problem is solved, thank you, but I don't understand why the icon was broken in the first place.

comment Setting default keyboard layout application-specific?
So I guess the answer is no, you cannot setup WinXP to remember the keyboard setting used for an application, and use it directly from the start (you have to change it manually after start of the application).

comment How can I scan multiple pages into a single PDF?
I needed to unclick the box "Use Custom Size". That made the "Scan" button available even in "Show details" mode, and did combine the scans to a single pdf.

I just tried that, but still get two jpeg files instead of one pdf. This has been working earlier, I suppose that Apple broke the program with a bad update. The "Scan" button is also grayed out if "Show details" mode, but not in "Hide details" mode. "It just works", please allow me to laugh.

comment Reliable custom Windows shortcut keys?
@Tyr: it does. I started using that in Windows XP, but continue to do so in Win7. I haven't used the start menu search very much, but my impression is that Launchy is still faster. I may be wrong on that though.

comment How to turn a keyboard shortcut into a Desktop shortcut?
As I understand it, you want several ways to perform one single action. Rather than making the file trigger the shortcut, that then triggers the action, I find it more logical to have both the file and the shortcut perform the action directly. file -> win-key -> start menu seems less logical than file -> start menu and win-key -> start menu separately. Maybe it's not practical in your case, but you can consider it.

and as the comment says, an example would clarify greatly.

I automatically interpreted that the keyboard shorcuts in question were custom ones. The result of my answer is a desktop file doing whatever OP wants, and a keyboard shortcut to trigger that file. That way he can continue to use his (assumingly custom) shortcut, while mouse-trapped users can use the shortcut. Everyone is happy. But I see your point. If OP wants a way to e.g. open the system settings with win+pause, I would say that the correct way is not to have a desktop file trigger win+pause, but to have the file open the system settings itself.
