comment Windows detected a hard disk issue, but scandisk detects nothing
good answer - I'm running these diagnostics now. Oddly, chkdsk turned up no errors...

I agree that if I could read that message I could probably know what's happening. At one point, I induced the error 5 times in a row and barely could read the first two words "There was a problem..." We're talking 100 ms, if that... The error probably went on to say "... in booting Windows, blah, blah, blah..." Thanks for the other tip; I will give it a try.

I let the motherboard auto-set the memory settings AND I tried manually setting them...

comment Access Existing Linux Installation from Windows Bootloader - Linux Installed and Then Windows 7
There was not that option, unfortunately, so I opted to reinstall Ubuntu on the existing Ubuntu partition. But then Windows is booting by default again. Which is weird, because I thought this would have fixed it by installing CRUB. Hmmm...

comment External Hard Drive Recognized on One System But not Another
Yah, good question: when the problem is occurring, the disk manager locks up on computer B. Like it cannot load data when the drive is in this state.

Hmm, "what he should want." Sounds rather presumptive ;-)

comment Disconnect a Program from its Socket or Port in Windows 7
I tested that as well, because it seemed like the natural thing to do at the time. No luck. However, I also tested outlook.exe, and upon disconnecting from its ports, the program remained open and the status definitely changed. I could send email, etc... I think it's specific to my program.

I already run my system with AUC off. You could be on to something with the program detecting and auto-reconnecting... Not sure. The status doesn't change, it just does nothing, after refresh.

I did, in both cases, run them as administrator...

Tried CurrPorts as well. Both apps don't seem to disconnect. They both have options to disconnect from the port, but when this option is selected, nothing seems to happen and the program, upon refresh, is still running and attached to the same port.

Good thought - I downloaded and tried this method with TCPView and it seemed to not allow this disconnection. Trying the other one now.

comment How do you check how much power a USB port can deliver?
This is a great trick. Unfortunately, for a PCI-e add-on USB 3.0 hub, the dialog doesn't show the power option.

I agree, when people downvote and don't give a reason, I think it should be invalidated...

The machine is not too old. In fact, the motherboard, RAM and CPU are about 1.25 years old. I'm not saying it's not the motherboard, but that would be a shame. I have a few good ideas from this post, however, so I should be able to get somewhere. Thanks.
