I am currently a web programmer for the University of Northern Colorado and I specialize in C# .net development. I have written programs using both C++ and C# and I believe in using the right tool for the job. I also have some background in SQL server and currently use SQLite for my own personal projects.

I'd delete it, but you can't delete the accepted answer.

comment How do I open a remote desktop session on a secondary monitor?
This worked great for me using it to move it to my secondary, left monitor. Doing so required me to use negative values. I can also confirm that Windows 8 does require absolute numbers for the winposstr field.

comment Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device
@uosɐſ: You'll need to download the Windows Driver Kit to sign the drivers. You'll need to sign the driver itself and create a catalog based on its inf and sign that as well. See Requirements for Device Driver Signing and Staging and Steps for Signing a Device Driver Package for more information. The note about kernel drivers and 64-bit only apply to boot time drivers. If your driver is a boot time driver you'll need to get an approved cert from Microsoft.

comment Windows 7 swaps screen contents upon de-hibernation
Both seem to wake up at the same time and have the same settings in Device Manager. Unfortunately, the issue isn't that the primary monitor switches inputs (it doesn't) it's that the monitor layout swaps back to default (meaning the secondary monitor moves from the left of the primary monitor to the right of the primary).

Yes, and unfortunately it did not make any difference. Thanks for the suggestion though!

comment Windows 7 swaps screen contents upon de-hibernation
@avirk: My situation is slightly different than edmx's. Mine occurs after a reboot and I just confirmed it does NOT happen after hibernation. I happened to offer a bounty on this because my situation is very similar to edmx's.

Thanks, running Catalyst 11.6 and still experience the same issue. On this last reboot it seemed to revert after I started the login process. While I waited on the login screen for the Ctrl+Alt+Del message it was ok, I enter my password and hit enter and it reset. Agh!

It was never using the ATI catalyst drivers, just the inbox Windows 7 drivers (and anything through Windows Update). I installed 11.6 catalyst and still the same issue. Though this time it seemed to apply after I started to log in, the layout was fine as I waited on the login screen.

I'll try it again. Tried it about a month ago with Catalyst 11.5 and it bluescreened Windows 7 when detecting the card. (Go figure, my first BSOD in a long, long time)

Unfortunately it did not work. It was pretty neat watching Windows reposition the monitors as I changed inputs while it was plugged in (so the layout was automatically correct after switching) but the problem persisted. After reboot it looked like it was ok and then partway through typing in my password it reset again. Thanks for the suggestion!

I'll give it a shot tomorrow morning but something had changed. For over a year it was fine and then about a month or two ago it started acting up like this.

@soandos: for mine, yes. It stays at 1280x1024 for both (yay 5:4!...) Mine is a ATI Radeon HD 3400, monitor 2 is the primary with monitor 1 to the left. When I reboot, monitor 2 keeps the taskbar (stays primary) but monitor 1 moves to the right.

I have the same exact issue - haven't tested hibernate but it happens on every reboot. Pisses me off. What's worse? If you're moving your mouse as it starts up, the layout is correct then, just as you get the prompt to log in it changes back.

Are you using source control? (TFS, SVN, SourceSafe *shudder*)

grep is 90% there (it'll find the files) but it doesn't use an index.

comment File versioning software
While Volume Shadow Copy does indeed make backups (I use it all the time) it doesn't actually do "versioning". It'll create snapshots of your data at that point in time, but if you edit a file 8 times between snapshots you'll have a choice between the latest edition and the way it looked during the last snapshot.

comment Windows: Impact of clean install Service Pack 2 to applications & data?
Just as a note, you don't have to install service packs one after another. You can install Vista RTM then patch directly to SP2. It includes all of the fixes from SP1 as well.

You know, I have been using Windows for years and years. I knew about the Unix sort command, uniq, etc. but never once thought to try it on Windows!

comment Run application or script on Windows RDC connection
While .TerminalServerSession should return true when a connection is established there is no event to fire. Additionally, when a user disconnects and the program is still running it will still return true for being run in a terminal server session and will have no knowledge when the user reconnects.

comment Windows 7 Backup Disk Full
I was expecting to have it happen automatically as well. I deleted the older backups using the Manage Space link on the Backup & Restore control panel. Under the System Image settings window I originally had "Let Windows manage the space used for backup history (maximum 69.87GB)" selected, once I ran out of space and cleaned up old backups I now have the "Keep only the latest system image and minimize space used by backup." option selected. Currently my data backup is 17GB (from 12/6/09 to 1/17/10) and there is 58GB left, so we'll see what happens in the future as it's used up.
