I am a computer and video-game enthusiast. I also like reading (mostly fantasy and science fiction). I enjoy good TV and movies too, which is of course subjective.

comment If a drive is not recognized during POST is it irreparably broken?
alternative to trying different ports/cables/computers an external USB-to-SATA/IDE adapter/connection can be useful for trouble shooting hard drives too

comment Make sure a Windows 95 computer doesn't have any viruses?
i would suggest using a tool to pull the CD key (assuming you don't still have it handy) and then format and reinstall

comment Why, after downloading Internet Explorer, do I get Google Chrome instead?
Internet Explorer 9 is much more modern in appearance than its predecessors and configured correctly can look similar to Chrome. forgive me for asking but, are you sure it is Chrome on your new laptop and not IE9?

comment Windows 7's RAM memory management/paging files
if win 7 was recently installed its possible the frequent HDD access you are witnessing is just the indexer for the desktop search, especially if you have a good amount of pre-existing files carried over

comment How do I export the charts in a spreadsheet as PNGs?
worst case you could take a screen shot, paste into your editor of choice and crop it. but there must be a better way.

in the Processes tab of Task Manager there should be a button to show processes from all users. have you enabled this option?

comment Disk space - when to concern oneself about it?
regarding backup strategy; off-sites are good and some would say critical for any "if I lose this I'm dead" data. however, while not trying to create an atmosphere of fear, keep in mind that there is no such thing as a 100% fail safe system

comment Disk space - when to concern oneself about it?
what is your goal? just worried about having enough free space, or more worried about backup/security of your data?

comment PC VGA-out to TV HDMI-in cable possible?
@user i have not tired this particular device, or any USB-HDMI adapters. i have, however, had occassion to use USB-DVI adapter, and it works well enough. I would say any desktop applications will work fine, but i wouldn't expect to play 3D games on it.

comment PC VGA-out to TV HDMI-in cable possible?
this is not a direct answer to your question, but using something like this (a USB video adapter with HDMI out) may work if you can't find another solution

comment Disable Stereo on Windows Vista (without hardware changes)
i do not have a Vista machine to test on, but where you select your speaker setup isn't there a Monaural (Mono, Single Speaker etc) option?

comment Administrator not an Administrator?
it is possible to (un)intentionally mark yourself as having no access to a file or folder. in this case you might try having another administrator try taking ownership and then see if they can grant you access to it

comment maximum file size capable of fitting onto a 700MB ISO CD-RW
@user43300 i remember when i would back up DVDs to CD i used to be able to fit around 706 MB on a disc (no overburning). i never checked the actual size of the files on the disc in KB though.

comment Are MAC addresses unique when coming out of the factory?
1.7 million combinations is certainly not a trivial number, but it isn't a very high number either. Not when you take a large manufacturer (like Netgear or Linksys etc) that have been around for over a decade making new hardware with "unique" MACs all the time

to clear the obvious, you've tried rebooting and you've made sure all applicable OS and Excel/Office updates are installed?
